PSLE 2012 Result

The results of the 2012 Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) in Singapore was released yesterday, on 22nd of November.

As announced earlier this week, the Ministry of Education did not released the top scorers of the exams, departing from the practice of previous years. I thought one of the reasons was due to excess numbers of parents from the past years had complained about the stress level of  P6 students had gone through when their result were compared to the top scorers.

However, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said: "It is not possible, nor desirable, to eliminate stress completely. Nor should we be shy about achievements."

Seriously, who is really having the stress? The students or the parents? From my understanding, every student had put in their best effort when they sat for their examinations. It was the parents who were not satisfied with the child's result and imposed the stress upon he/she because they thought their child had work so hard and for that reason their child should have done better than others.

Really? The result speaks louder than words.

I know for a fact that my child had been studying very hard since the embargo months from July 7th to October 3rd, the last day of the examination. He studied day and night with no tuition. That earned him a T-score 268 as compared to the top score of 285. I could not imagine how much time and hard work for those students who have scored between the range. Go figure...

As a parent, I fully understand the feelings of wanting the child to do well. However,  we have to learn not to demand but to encourage them to strive for their best.

"PSLE is an important exam - but it is not the be-all and end-all. It marks the conclusion of one stage of the learning journey - and the road ahead is a long one," Mr Heng added. "As adults, all of us will have to learn continually throughout our lives. It is not healthy to have such national focus at this stage of the journey".

I strongly agreed with Mr Heng. It's a milestones which all the P6 students have achieved in their education journey and they should continue to pursue learning along appropriate pathways. Now that PSLE is over, let's cheer and continue to support our children to take up new challenges in the next phase coming...

The Amy Cheong saga… fast and furious, gone the next day!

Based on Yahoo! News

Consider the timeline of events.
Late on Sunday evening: Amy Cheong makes Facebook post
Monday, around 3am: First petition calling for Amy Cheong to be fired springs up on Facebook
7am: Her post starts going viral on Facebook, Twitter and social media
9am: Mainstream, online media and local blog sites begin to pick up on the story
10am: NTUC chief Lim Swee Say makes first public comment
1030am: Police report filed against Amy Cheong by member of the public
1230pm: NTUC issue statement of Cheong's dismissal
Sometime in the afternoon: Vacant position advertised on Jobstreet
530pm: Amy Cheong issues full statement of apology

Think of poor Amy. Within a space of less than 24 hours, her world has collapsed -- she's lost her job, her career, her reputation and maybe even her friends. She is also potentially facing criminal charges and a fine or jail time.
**************************************************************
If you have not heard about this local news in Singapore, you probably go " What the...?"
Well, it all began on last Sunday, Oct 7th. A lady named Amy Cheong had expressed her anger and frustrations by posting her offensive comments on her personal Facebook page regarding another class of population, Malay holding weddings at void decks under HDB flat units.

I just wonder what if:
- Amy Cheong is not the former assistant director of NTUC membership, will this news be as hot as it is?
- Amy Cheong was not giving her racially insensitive remarks on the Malays but the Chinese who also use the void decks for funeral events instead of wedding, will this become a racism issue?
- Amy Cheong did not use %#^*&$# on her remarks but just simply a comment on her personal feelings towards events that are held at the void decks that could cause unpleasantness to some, will this kind of comment be acceptable?
- Amy Cheong is not a Chinese but a Malay, will her comments be considered racist?
- Amy Cheong has her comments spoken at the Speakers' Corner in Hong Lim Park, will that be an offense?
- what if, what if, what if.......

The above questions are not posted to show my support to Amy Cheong's behaviour. As a matter of fact, I totally despised it because no one should be rude to anyone. Having say that, it does not mean that we could not voice up our opinions, except one should not acts foolishly before giving a thought to every situation.

P.S.
I am curious, if there is a particular department where we can send our posts for screening for sensitivity contents before posting to avoid getting into trouble with the law in Singapore ?

How to reduce on hydro bill?

Our monthly hydro bill has been reduced from about $250 to about $110 since two year ago. It sounds amazing to reduce more than 50% off the bill for 5 residents in one 4 rooms HDB flat.
Well, we did it!
Here are 10 easy ways to cut down the $$ on the hydro bill in our home in Singapore.

Electricity and water saving:
  1. Replace air-conditioner with fan. On an extremely hot day, you may just turn on the air-conditioner for only half an hour to cool off the bedroom if you must.
  2. Turn off the light and fan when no one is in the room.
  3. Use a lower voltage lamp in the room if it is not used for reading.
  4. Light a candle instead of having to turn on the light in the passageway whenever someone needs to walk to the toilet.
  5. Open all windows allowing sunlight to come into the room rather than turning on the light during the day.
  6. Do most of the housework chores during the day to avoid using the light at night.
  7. Do not turn on 2 or more televisions when everybody in the family is watching the same program in different rooms.
  8. Plan your linen and clothing washing wisely so that you will not waste electricity and water on small loads of laundry.
  9. All showers should not take more than 10 minutes unless you have just fallen into a muddy pit.
  10. No computer games.

Talking Point

Source: Channel NewsAsia
Programme: Talking Point - The Vote Live on Tuesday (Sept 11th) 8 pm
Topic: Love Thy Neighbour

Discussion:
Cooking smells, noisy parties, high-rise littering.

What annoys you about your neighbours?

Law minister K Shanmugam recently said on Facebook that a legal framework might be needed to enforce good neighbourly behaviour. But is it really necessary?

My talking points:
Why do we have annoying people around us all the time? Do we at any one point of time, actually do something to annoy others as well? What is wrong with the people these days, living in this modern and civilised city while they did things to annoy others at work, home or in any other places? Do these anti-social behaviours continue because no one has told them that they were wrong? Or do they think they live isolated? Or just simply "king of the world" ignoring everyone because they do not care? And why wouldn't they care?

My thoughts:
For those people that have anti-social behaviours are those who have been living in their own la-la-land for too long, not knowing or choosing not to know what is happening in the real world. As if anything you don't know wouldn't hurt you! (Well, if you don't know that you have a brain tumor, does not mean it doesn't hurt?) These people have to learn to do more self-reflection, what seems to be ok to one, may not be ok to others. So learn the basic rules of "mankind", that is to be a kind man! As long as everyone play their role to show their kindness and consideration to others then this topic will no longer be an issue because you will love thy neighbour and thy neighbour shalt love thee also!

My suggetions:
The following suggestions can be considered by respective departments to take action against "animals" other than mankind:-

Case 1: Noisy/smelly pets
If 3 warning letters from town council does not help then as long as 3 neighbours from 3 different units signed a petition, the pet should be picked up by SPCA and the owner of the pet will be fully responsible for all costs incurred.
Reason: Generally, man and animal do not live together, or it would be called a pet. If so, it should be controlled or else the man is in no condition to live with an animal that can cause misery to other men.

Case 2: Noisy parties
If 3 warning letters from town council does not help then as long as 3 neighbours from 3 different units signed a petition, the occupants will be evcuated by HDB and relocate them to another unit at a specific zone where such man will live with other men of their own kind.
Reasons: Generally, man and animal do not live together which means a man has to behave like a man or else he should be put together with other party animals. Therefore, be a party animal or be a man.

Case 3: Dripping laundry (including sauces, urine...etc)
If 3 warning letters from town council does not help then the town council should fine them and the money should go to compensate those affected neighbours who needed to re-wash their laundry or as compensation for damaged laundry.
Reason: The fine money should goes to the people who need it the most. If a man cannot even understand the basic rule of mankind, how can he understand why his money ended up with the authorities who are not affected by his behaviour. Make sense?

Case 4: Blocking corridor or walkway
For fire hazard prevention, there should not be any item lying around the corridor or common walkway, irregardless whether it is only a few pots of plants, shoes, clothings...etc. If 3 warning letters from town council does not help then confiscate all belongings immediately without notice because the authority has every right to remove any "rubbish" that are lying around the common area.
Reason: HDB has neglected to collect rental from tenants who have taken the advantage of their so-called "extra space" outside their units. It is about time for HDB to pay attention to this area.

Case 5: Noisy auto vehicles parked at HDB resident parking lots
If 3 or more complaints within a month has been submitted to town council for the same noisy auto vehicle, then parking permit will be suspended for 3 months. Repeated offender more than 3 times will not be issused a permit for life.
Reason: If this does not shake up the driver or cyclist then I do not know what will! I guess they will have to move to "the other man zone"!

Case 6: High-rise littering (Killer Litter)
Killer Litter is an offence. However it is hard to catch the offender red handed. Once caught and convicted, on top of the sentence, HDB will strip off his/her right to own a HDB flat permantly.
Reason: There is no excuse for one man to endanger the life of another man. This is to ensure that all men understood the law of paying a high price for littering from a high-rise.

Case 7: Inappropriate behaviour in lift (smoking, vandalism, etc)
Install a surveillance TV in every lift, if caught doing inappropriate behaviour, the offender will be fined and banned from using the lift for 3 months. The fine will go towards the maintennce of the lift and the CCTV. A picture of the offender will be posted on a notice board outside the lift.
Reason: Besides paying for your action, one should also be ashamed of causing inconvenience to others.

To sum up; If chewing gun can be banned in this country, I do not see why can't we make this a finer city to live in, This goes to show that it is not the lack of laws but the lack of enforcement. In short, we can make this a better place for mankind, just simply be a better man!

Singapore National Songs

Singapore National Day is just around the corner, on August 9th. More than a decade ago,  new theme songs are selected for every National Day celebration. Here are some of the all-time favourites that will melt your heart and might even bring tears especially if you are a Singaporean being somewhere rather than home...
I had met someone at Toronto Japanese School many years ago. During our conversation, I came to learn that he is a Singaporean who is not able to return to his place of birth for a reason that I did not ask but I could guess. Unfortunately, we have lost contact but I believe till today, he is still out there waiting for his chance to step on his homeland once again...
Meantime, I would like to dedicate the following songs to him, and hopefully these national songs could help to fill a corner of his empty heart...

Love At First Light by Olivia Ong (2012)
Smile And Love Will Grow by Lorriane Tan (2012)
*I have just found a Singapore song that is not an official national song but it's so cool.
Check it out: I Still Love You (2012)
"I Still Love You" is a creative collaboration between Monster Cloud Films, Blotch Studios, Richopus Music, Galvin Sng, and many others... involving a cast and crew of more than 70 people, and featuring the heartlands of Singapore.

How to lose weight?

One way to do it is by watching someone's way of eating...

"Who holds the record for eating 91 Chinese dumplings in eight minutes? A guy named Cookie, of course. Weighing just over 400 pounds, Cookie Jarvis holds more titles than anyone in the world, including his first title of World Ice Cream Eating Champion where he ate one gallon, 9 ounces in 12 minutes."
Bing: See more photos of Jarvis
Video: Watch him take on a stack of corn on the cob

If watching Cookies's way of eating does not discourage you then try the next video of Booker. Good luck!

"You probably wouldn't want to go trick-or-treating on Halloween with major league record-holder Eric Booker, who consumed two pounds of chocolate candy bars in six minutes. Booker also holds the records for doughnuts and pumpkin pies and he obviously doesn’t turn down hot-dog eating invitations."

What Singaporeans should know...

There is this popular TV show in Singapore called "We are Singaporeans". It is a gameshow that aired on MediaCorp Channel 5 about everything and anything of Singapore from history to culture to trivia.
Find out more: We are Singaporeans
Here are some of the questions I personally think that most Singaporeans will know the answers for sure:-
Where is the best place to sun your bedding items? Answer: Children playground.
Where is the best place to grow your house plant in a HDB (Housing Development Board - public housing) flat? Answer: Common areas outside the unit.
How many stray cats can be found in residential areas? Answer: As many as they can breed.
How do drivers get away from modifying their automobiles without approval? Answer: Cross their fingers. (They usually get away, tons of them are still on the road.)
Where is the hottest spot for motor cyclists to park their vehicles? Answer: Anywhere that is convenient to them.
Where is the favourite place for Singaporeans to put their shoe rack in the house? (Think outside the box!) Answer: Outside the house. (Of course! It's so convenient.)
Where do Singaporeans dispose their unwanted but unwilling to part with household items? Answer: Common areas where they can see them, not blocking their walkways but yours.
Name the forbbiden areas for smokers to smoke in the public. Answer: None.
How to get children smarter in Singapore? Answer: Hire the most expensive tutor.
What is the most popular kind of food found on most Singaporeans' home dining table? Answer: Hawker food.
*The above answers are based on what I see, what I hear and what I know. Totally my point of views, do not take it personal if you are a Singaporean!

Monkey business

2 weeks ago, I was at a bus-stop, somewhere in Bukit Timah (Singapore) where I had videoed 2 interesting scenes back to back.
From scene 1, I could understand why the monkey was behaving that way in a public because it is an animal whereas the other one...hmm I am not sure. He was smoking right next to the the non-smoking sign, polluting the environment with his second hand smoke...sigh...sometimes I find it hard to distinguish between a man and an animal by their behaviours.
Check them out: Monkey business scene 1 & Monkey business scene 2

Shower habit

Staying in a hot, hot country like Singapore is no joke. The humidity is so high that it stands about an average of 80% everyday thoroughout the year. To learn about the weather in Singapore, go to Weather in Singapore
Since I am talking about the weather, I do not mean shower as in "rain drops keep falling on my head"...but shower to cleanse my body. I thought you might find it interesting how often I can take shower in a day. The followings are the activities done in a day, taken from the most busiest day of the week whereby a shower is required after each activity:
Shower...
  • waking up first thing in the morning
  • came back from grocery shopping at the martket
  • right after housework chores
  • after cooking lunch
  • after lunch
  • before my afternoon nap
  • after cooking dinner
  • before my evening walk
  • after my evening walk
  • before going to bed
  • waking up in the middle of night (jet-lag)
  • oops, almost forgot...after every poopoo
See, I never understand why our water bill is always so expensive!!! Duh!
